Middle- and high school-aged youth may be referred to Teen Court for such misdemeanors as:

Shoplifting Larceny
Simple affray Simple assault
Possession of marijuana/alcohol Communicating threats
Injury to personal/real property Trespassing
Truancy

The process begins when the Teen Court and Youth Services Coordinator receive a referral from Juvenile Services, court officials, law enforcement officers, or a school administrator. If the case is appropriate for Teen Court, the teen will be contacted and, if he or she admits responsibility for the offense, he or she may voluntarily participate in the program.

An interview is then scheduled with the teen and his or her parent(s) or guardian(s). The parties sign an agreement to voluntarily participate, with the understanding that no criminal charges will be pursued if the Teen Court sentence is completed.

Rules and regulations are discussed and a Teen Court appearance date is scheduled at the interview. The teen is assured that all proceedings will be held in strict confidence.
